“The hard times will begin to fade, and joy will take their place." This message was written on a little piece of paper that came out after I broke the bow-shaped, crispy, sugar cookie that was served to me after my Chinese meal. What a good fortune! Fortune cookie is the first thing that comes to my mind whenever I hear the words, "Chinese food". Fortune cookies lift up spirits with promises of great success, love and harmony, fame ,and good fortune. These cookies remind me of something, an event that I will never forget. It was one of those cold Saturday evenings in December; I was in my room; I was too excited; I was too nervous , and my heart was really beating too fast. I couldn't stay in one place. I sat on the side of my bed; I stood up; I looked at the mirror; I walked towards the window; I turned around, and then looked at the mirror again. I combed my hair, put some powder on my face, and put some lipstick. I turned around as I looked through the mirror, looking at myself from head to toe. I kept doing these things for almost half an hour. The night before, I almost didn’t sleep. I was waiting for this day... for this evening. Saturday was my favorite day of the week. I then walked through the room, stared at my watch, and looked at the window again. It was too dark out there. However, as I looked down, the white snow on the ground was still visible. There was a snow storm few days ago , and I was thankful that the storm was over. I was so happy that there was no more blizzard outside. With bad weather, it would be hard for somebody who would be all the way from Bloomfield to come to Branchville. Then again, I looked at my watch. It was almost seven o'clock. I decided to go downstairs. I moved the curtain covering the window in our dining room to see if there was any car coming into our driveway. I then went into the living room, turned on the radio, and sat down in the soft sofa. I noticed the time in the small antique clock displayed at the top of the table between the windows in our living room. I saw the minute hand moved; then a light, romantic music started to play. The melody drove deep into my soul. My emotions swayed with the music. It was the song, "Endless Love", sung by Lionel Richie and Dianna Ross, the song that Dennis and I sang together in our karaoke the second time he visited me. Dennis was the one I was waiting for. Since I met him, it seemed everything was beautiful. I felt so inspired and energetic. The hope that I lost came back. He was introduced to me by my friend whose brother is his friend. He started visiting me every weekend since then. He's such a wonderful person, a person I will always treasure. I found a true friend in Dennis. He was there to lend an ear when I had problems; he gave me hope and courage and helped me through the difficult times in my life. He taught me how to be strong and how to speak up for myself. He wiped away my tears. My sadness turned to gladness. The gloomy days turned into bright and colorful days. Rainbow started to show up in my world. Truly, Dennis was God's answer to my prayers. He’s a gift given to me by God I will always cherish. A heaven sent gift that brought meaning into my life. Knowing him was the best thing that ever happened to me. He’s one of the reasons why I want to stay in America. Then I heard the door bell so I ran to the door, stood up there, fixed my blouse, fixed my hair, then I took a deep breath and opened the door. There he was, the man who made me feel incredibly happy, the man who made me realize that I can fall in love again, the man whom God brought into my life. The minute I saw him, my heart began to flutter. I felt my face was so hot, I was blushing; magic and bliss were floating in the air. I smelled the alluring fragrance of roses and the sweet scent of the candles that I just lighted few moments ago. I gave him my loveliest smile. I felt my face was glowing, and maybe he saw that my eyes were even sparkling because of extreme happiness. His sweet smile made my night wonderful .His glamorous and passionate eyes made me feel like an ice melting in front of burning flames of fire. I was electrified the time his cheek touched my cheek. My heart danced the moment I heard his voice saying hello. It was such an amazing moment. Heaven was in my heart. My spirit flew into the air. My whole body was like a river overflowing with joy. Confetti, glitter , and petals of roses began to fall into our heads. ... |
