Forgetful Who?
http://instruct.westvalley.edu/lafave/hb.html <--We read this story in class, and this was the assignment:
SITUATION: Assume that you are living in the society depicted in this short story and, naturally, as a superior individual, you have been saddled with various handicaps by the "Handicapper General".
ASSIGNMENT: In a one or two-page narrative (use third person, past tense, and include dialogue), describe some event or series of events from a day in your life. Be sure to indicate the handicaps you are struggling under which are designed to bring you down to the lowest common denominator.
I know it's not a love story, but I think this is funny and thought I might share it with you.
So here it is!
+++++++++++
Lulian sat on the couch like anyone else would have sat on the sofa. Something beeped and Lulian ignored it until she remembered that the beep was reminding her of something. She looked down at her wrist where they put something they called a "reminder watch", but she forgot what they called it, so she just called it the "bleepy-thingy". This time, it was telling her to get food in the kitchen. She got up and headed towards the kitchen, which was labelled for her. You see, Lulian is very good at forgetting things, so the Handicapper General, whose name she'd forgotten, gave her this "reminder watch" so that Lulian could remember what she needed to do!
"Bleep bleep bleep!" Something was making a noise again. Lulian looked down. Oh, it was her watch! She looked at what it said.
"Go to the fridge and get food to eat," she read aloud. She thought for a moment before looking for the refrigerator. Her eyes passed over many things. Table, chair, chair, chair, forks, drawer, fridge, sugar, cup, teapot, pots, pans, spatulas…
"What was I doing?" Lulian asked herself. She shrugged, and went outside to sit on a couch that seemed really familiar, but she couldn't quite remember where she'd seen it before. She looked at a box that projected pictures.
"That's so cool!" She exclaimed, before watching the thing we know as television in wonder. "How does it do that?"
After a long time, Lulian's watch beeped again.
"Bleep! Bleep! Bleep!" She still stared at moving pictures in fascination. "Bleep! Bleep! Bleep!"
"Huh? Oh, this thing!" Lulian said to herself, and giggled. "It makes such a pretty sound!" So Lulian stared at her watch, admiring the pretty beeping sounds and wondering why it would be doing that for any reason at all.
