Written in the Stars

I am here to tell you we can never meet again
Simple really, isn’t it, a word or two and then
A lifetime of not knowing where or how or why or when
You think of me, or speak of me, or wonder what befell
The someone you once loved so long ago, so well
*-------
"– I never want to see your face again," he said harshly. Her eyes never met his, and his heart tore into pieces. This was the girl he loved – and he was breaking her heart. In that moment, a fat teardrop trailed down her cheek. He desperately wanted to pull her into his arms, to kiss away her tears. He held himself back with every ounce of willpower he had. Taking one last look at her, he turned around and walked away.
She lifted her eyes and watched his blurred figure walk away. Her heart was crushed with every step he took. It was only until the outline of his body wasn't visible to her anymore that the sobs racked her body and the tears streamed down her face. He was such a loving person. Four years of a loving relationship ended coldly simply because his mother had decided to move in with his new step-father. Even so, when had he lost faith in their relationship? It was always strong. How could distance possibly have stopped them? He'd only become isolated three days ago, and it was an abrupt change. This new person was not the guy she'd fallen in love with. He was going away. He was going to fall in love again with someone else. He was never going to come back.
If her heart wasn't torn enough before, it was shattered now.

Never wonder what I’ll feel as living shuffles by
You don’t have to ask me and I need not reply

His heart was broken. He closed his eyes and he could see her smile, her eyes twinkle, her angelic face, her puppy eyes, her pout, her confused face, her angry glower, her frown, and her tear-streaked face and speechless – which was probably how she looked when he last left her. He squeezed his eyes tightly. 'Don't think about her,' he scolded himself. No matter what he told himself, though, everything he thought of led back to thoughts of her.
He plopped onto his new bed, in his new home. This was the house that his step-father and mother had chosen after they married. It was a luxurious mansion, but it was empty.
"So how are you faring, Adam, my dear step-son?" a man at the door leered at him. The sarcasm was impossible to miss.
Adam stared at the man, standing at his full height in order to stare at him eye to eye. "I'm never going to see her again. Leave her alone."
"Done." Immediately, his step-father's voice was low, "This stays between the two of us. Tell anyone, and she dies." With no time to utter another word, he turned around and stalked off into his large office.
Adam dropped himself into the chair. She was safe.
He clearly remembered the conversation between his step-father and himself a couple of weeks ago.
~ Adam persisted and stayed stubborn as he continued the heated conversation with his soon-to-be step-father.
"Break up with her and never see her again If my business workers knew what kind of a poor person my new step-son was dating…" his voice diminished in sound, thinking of the aftermath of those facts spreading around his wealthy world, "My reputation would be ruined!"
"You can't stop me. I love her," Adam protested.
"If you don't break up with her, I will kill her."
Adam froze. "You wouldn't…" He trailed off. Adam remembered researching him. The man's wife was killed in a car accident while they were in the midst of splitting everything while filing a divorce. His mother overdosed in sleeping pills, leaving him all the money because he was the only heir…
"I would. Leave her and never see her again."
Shocked, Adam nodded.
~
Adam let out a shaky sigh. If only his mother wasn't too blinded by love to see what kind of man she'd married. Instead, she willingly did everything for him. Adam could only hope that this man would be good to his mother.

Every moment of my life from now until I die
I will think or dream of you and fail to understand
How a perfect love can be confounded out of hand

Evangeline didn't want to get out of bed. She felt weak. It was pointless. It had only been a day since Adam left her, but she felt drained of tears already.
It had been four years. Four glorious, memorable years. And just like that, it stopped. She missed seeing him already. Tears leaked from her eyes. So maybe she did have some tears left. Either way, she was exhausted.
For a whole day, she'd stayed in her bed. Even her dreams were of him. She spent every second replaying the moment when he broke up with her. She'd never heard him to talk anyone in such a tone. It wasn't a completely harsh tone, actually. No matter how cold he sounded, there was pain and longing etched in his voice. Or, maybe that was just Evangeline's own imagination. His voice echoed in her head. Every time he said something sweet to her – she remembered. Every time he teased her – she remembered. Every time he'd whispered "I love you" into her ears – she remembered. Every time they declared that their love was perfect and that nothing could tear them apart – she remembered.
How had he forgotten?

Adam stood stiffly in his tuxedo.
"You look absolutely adorable!" his mother squealed, and kissed his cheeks. She turned to her husband. "You're so handsome," she told him and pecked his lips. She, herself, was dressed in an elegant evening gown.
After being satisfied with their appearance, Adam's mother reached for her purse, only to realize it wasn't downstairs.
"Oops!" She giggled giddily. "I'll be right back!" With that said, she bounded up the stairs to fetch her small handbag.
The moment she was out of ear-shot, Adam's step-father spoke to him. "There's a young lady there. Her father is a business acquaintance. We have a contract that he hasn't signed yet – he's still 'debating'. If he signs it, we'll be even richer! I want you to win his daughter over so he'll sign the contract quicker," his step-father muttered gruffly. Adam nodded wordlessly, although his step-father knew that he would agree without questions.
For weeks, his new step-father had done nothing except threaten Adam with the death of Evangeline. Every time, Adam would agree. He had no choice, because Adam thought that the devil of a man standing before his eyes would kill Evangeline – and he's right.
Adam's step-father was ruthless, cold, uncaring and heartless. His only thoughts and concerns were about money and his reputation. Anything else was worthless to him – including his new wife and son. He'd only married Adam's mother because she was the perfect trophy wife. That and a business enemy of his had been madly in love with her before.
"I'm back!" Adam's mother chirped. Happy, she linked arms with her husband and headed towards an extravagant limousine. Adam trailed behind, his spirit broken.

"Happy birthday dear Eva, Happy birthday to you!" Cheering erupted from the group after they had finished belting out the last sentences of the song. The candle flickered. Evangeline smiled, and prepared to make the same wish she'd been making for three years in a row. She put her hands together.
"How old are you now? How old are you now?" Her friends began screeching again. They sounded horrible, and almost every note was off.
"NOOoooo!" Evangeline mock-cried. She grinned. Her friends were so silly! She waiting until they got to the teens.
"-teen, are you seventeen, are you eighteen are you nineteen, are you FIFTY TWO!?" They stopped and stared at the person who said that. Emily smiled and gave them all innocent looks. They laughed at her, and turned back to Evangeline. It was silent except the shuffling of some feet.
"Now what?" Evangeline asked them, the grin never leaving her face. Silence again. Then, almost all at once, laugher filled the room.
"Make a wish, make a wish, make a wish!" they continued chanting.
Evangeline clasped her hands together and her expression became serious once she bowed her head and closed her eyes.
'I wish I could hear his voice, just one more time.' She blew out the candle. Everyone applauded, and Evangeline cut the cake. Everyone munched happily away until the whole cake was gone. The party ended later in the afternoon, as many had to get back to work or back home to their kids. She smiled and hugged Emily, her second-last guest and best friend, and bid her farewell.
"Thanks Emi, Love you!"
"See you around, sweetie!" Emily released her, and went to her car. Just before speeding off, Emily blew a kiss and winked at Evangeline. She raised an eyebrow. Emily never did that unless something was going to happen.
She felt hands wrap around her waist, and a gentle kiss brush her cheek. She turned her head slightly to see her boyfriend millimeters away from her face. She smiled and pecked his lips. He put his own forehead to hers.
"I haven't given you your present yet." Their noses touched.
"What is it?" she asked, but didn't really care.
He had only been her boyfriend for a couple months. Their five month anniversary was coming up soon. At least, that's what she thought; she couldn't remember. She'd known him for a month before dating him. Going out with him was because her friends persuaded her to, telling her that she must do something to get over Adam. Besides, Simon was a great guy, and he deserved a chance.
He pulled her into the house and led her to the couch, and pointed out a flat-boxed present. It was plain, and not wrapped. Curious at last, she pulled herself away from his arms and picked it up. It was a velvet box, and it contained jewelry. She realized that she should have known by the box itself that it held a necklace. She lifted the top open to reveal a shining crystals necklace. It was anything but simple. It was absolutely dazzling. The precious stone twinkled at her, and she knew it was real.
Evangeline was astounded. Her breath caught in her throat as her fingers gently skimmed over the jewels – almost like contact even the slightest bit harder would crumble the necklace into ashes. Her eyes never left the necklace when Simon lifted it out of the inferior velvet case and placed it properly around her neck. Her fingers skimmed gracefully over the gems, feeling the cold silver against her bare skin. She was simply speechless.
"I want to take you out tonight. Wear the necklace. You look beautiful," he whispered into her ears, and left her standing in her in the middle of the living room.

Nothing can be altered, oh, there is nothing to decide
No escape, no change of heart, no any place to hide
You are all I’ll ever want but this I am denied
Sometimes in my darkest thoughts I wish I never learned
What it is to be in love and have that love returned

Adam sat with his fiancé at the dinner table. It was silent. He could see her biting her bottom lip, and knew she wanted a dance.
Adam's fiancé was completely in love with him. The feelings, however, didn't move him. His step-father decided that if he and this girl, Rachel, got married, the business with himself and Rachel's father would be better – and he was probably right. The man never did anything unless it did him good. Thus, the marriage was arranged. They were to be wed in a month.
It had been three years – three long, torturous years since he'd seen his only love, Evangeline. But as far as he was concerned, she was alive. For three years, his step-father had threatened him with the death of Evangeline or Adam's mother in order for him to do exactly as he'd wanted. And so he did. Since Adam and become part of the family, his father's business prospered.
A song came on. "Would you like to dance?" Adam asked the nervous girl. It wasn't that he'd wanted to dance with her, exactly. He'd just felt sorry for the poor girl. Besides, they were supposed to be husband and wife soon enough, so he might as well try to get to know her.
He held her properly in his arms, but he felt nothing towards the innocent girl. Silence hung between them. It was a slow song, and he was bored. He felt a gentle body bump into his larger frame and saw that the lady would have fallen, had her partner not held onto her. "Thanks," he heard the girl whisper to the young man, around his own age.
Adam's heart stopped. That was the voice he'd wanted to hear for years.
"Evangeline?" he managed to croak. Suddenly, hope flushed into his body and his heart beat faster than it had since the last time he'd seen her.
She turned around and met his eyes.

She prepared as quickly as she could to go out with Simon. Since it was such a luxurious necklace, she needed a dress to match its beauty. It was difficult, but with the little time she had, she had finally chosen a simple black dress as well as matching heels, but it looked stunning on her.
When Simon came to pick her up, he stared at her in awe until he finally came to his senses. He brushed his lips against her knuckles and made her heart flutter oh-so slightly. It was so romantic; the only problem was that Simon was no Adam.
They arrived at a beautiful restaurant, and Simon gallantly requested a dance. She smiled and accepted, obviously.
They'd been dancing for a while. Small, light conversations that meant absolutely nothing. Her heels had just begun to hurt when she bumped into someone, who made such an impact that she would have fallen over. Thankfully, Simon was there to catch her.
"Thanks," she muttered gratefully. She wobbled as she attempted to stand properly again.
"Evangeline?" a male voice called softly. Evangeline almost fell over again. She could feel tears stinging the back of her eyes. This was the voice she'd longed to hear for three years. Had her birthday wish come true at last?
She slowly rotated and stared into eyes she'd wanted to lose herself into again for all these years.

"It's been three years," Adam started, once they had left the restaurant, excusing themselves from their dates for a few moments.
Silence. They watched, side by side as the stars danced in spot up in the sky. It had been so long since they'd done that together.
"I missed you," they both said in unison. They smiled, drinking in the other's image as if they'd disappear from their eyes in any second.
"That girl in there," Evangeline started, somewhat unsure, "is she your girlfriend?"
He paused. "No, not exactly." Evangeline relaxed, but was torn at his next sentence. "She's my… fiancé."
"Fiancé?" she croaked. And he nodded in confirmation.
"And is he… your boyfriend?" Adam asked, wishing that she said he wasn't.
"He is," she whispered almost guiltily. Now they were both torn.
More silence. It was as though they were still one, because during that silence, both had decided that neither should meet each other again, for it would only rub salt into open wounds. They looked into each other's eyes and a tear rolled down Evangeline's cheek. This time, Adam wiped it away with his thumb.
"Don't cry…" he ordered her softly. His heart felt like breaking all over again. He still loved her. He always will. They were still perfect for each other.
She threw her arms around his neck and cried. Instinctively, he wrapped his arms around her waist. They still fit perfectly together.
"I love you," she whispered to him between sniffles.
"I love you, too," he told her, and kissed her cheek.
And the two wished that just the one minute lasted an eternity.

These are lyrics from a song called "Written in the Stars." I have no idea who the orginal singer was, but I have the version of Elton John & Leann Rimes. It's a beautiful song

~ Is for thinking about something that was not happening in at the moment, but thinking of what had already happened.~
This story is fictional and very cliché, I admit. It's been a while since I've written. Please give me feedback and comments? Thank you. :]
Haha, I just realized that this story looked SOOO much better on FictionPress where you can see all the italicized words and the things are indented and centered properly. Hmmm.... http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2414844/1/ That`s the site for this tory, if you`re curious about how it looks there. Thank you. :]
